System Overview
Working at a university library is not a difficult task, especially at the student level, however there is quite a lot of information needed to perform the job. Would you want to learn this through a print manual sprinkled with a few screenshots, but mainly text? Students definitely don’t. Library Student Assistant Training breaks the print manual cycle through using the Canvas Learning Management System to relay training material in small chunks, grouping together relevant information and providing an easy to follow training map. Students learn through viewing videos, presentations, and interactive infographics before being assessed with each lesson ending in the ultimate evaluation, demonstrating the acquired knowledge to a supervisor.
Library Student Assistant Training Homepage
Unlike some university libraries, the Education Library is a small branch with a family-like feel. The Library Student Assistant Training Canvas course’s homepage needed to reflect this. Students logging into Canvas to begin training are immediately met by a familiar image of the library that reflects its home-like atmosphere and a welcome message that reinforces this sentiment through using the term “family.” The page then directs students to the assignments section and asks them to take a final survey once the training is complete.
Modules Training Overview
Each lesson can be found within the modules section of the course. Organized in an easy to follow format, students are able to see each component of the first lesson, identify that each item must be completed, and determine how many points are assigned for the sections. This provides a quick frame of reference as students move through the training.
Assignment Example
Assignments within the eTraining vary depending on the lesson and best format for imparting the knowledge. This provides and example of a lesson using video as the chosen format. A brief description of the lesson precedes the embedded video. Some students may need more assistance after watching the overview tutorial, so information on how to access additional resources is provided. Easy to use navigation buttons assist students in continuing or reviewing lessons as they move through training content instead of having to go back to the modules or assignments lists.
MindNode Lesson Organization Map
Before designing an online training course, it is important to understand the lessons to be presented and how information will be organized. MindNode, a mind mapping tool, was used to provide a visual representation of the information’s organization. While only one lesson was partially developed within the final Canvas training course, the highlighted learning object and an overview video were created in their entirety for the project. Having some developed content, shell assignments ready for learning objects to be added, and a mind map showing course structure allows for the course to be completed or expanded at any time.
